Camp Discovery Launches New Environmental Education Program
Discovery Days Ignites Outdoor Learning and Stewardship in Youth

Columbia, SC (August 20, 2013) – In an age when children are spending less time outside than ever before, Camp Discovery is launching a new program designed to awaken the senses and get children outdoors!  Discovery Days provides unique hands-on experiences, engaging recreational activities, and outdoor exploration to complement classroom learning and instill a greater understanding of the intricate relationship between humans and the natural world.

“Discovery Days is an exciting expansion of Camp Discovery’s programs, especially at a time when schools are realizing more and more the significant benefits of environmental literacy among children,” says Joanna Weitzel, Associate Director of Camp Discovery.

Discovery Days builds a bridge between academics and the real world by providing hands-on opportunities to explore, to experience, and to discover in nature.  Students learn to analyze what they are seeing and develop a deeper understanding of the world around us.  Teachers plan their own Discovery Days experience by selecting from among a variety of environmental lessons that fit standards of team collaboration, scientific inquiry and critical thinking.  Half and full day visits are available for groups of all ages with content that is age and developmentally appropriate.

“Many children today are experiencing nature through a screen,” says Weitzel.  “With Discovery Days, we take youth away from the computers and move them outside, fueling their imaginations and igniting a sense of environmental stewardship.  Outdoor learning is perfect for that!”
