Natural spaces at Camp Discovery offer the perfect outdoor classroom and field study destination for exploration, inquiry and hands-on learning! Discovery Days programs are aligned with the current SC Academic Science Standards and Performance Indicators, but still reflect the simplicity and thrill of the outdoor experience by providing safe, high-quality recreational and educational opportunities in harmony with the Camp’s natural setting. Our goal is to encourage the next generation of learners and leaders to be good stewards of our natural resources through hands-on, immersive learning in the fields of Life Science, Physical Science and Earth Science.
Discovery Days activities are led by experienced, certified environmental educators and incorporate the following:
• A literature based mini lesson to reinforce vocabulary and key information
• An interactive S.T.E.M. based component including hands-on activities specific to lesson
• An interpretive hike to specific habitats and/or historic sites within the camp
• A fun team building challenge for each group
Program Information & Pricing
Our experiences at Camp Discovery are designed to encourage students to be environmental scientists by asking thoughtful questions, making observations and communicating their findings. Our Discovery Days programs run about two and a half hours, with a short snack break. Snacks are brought/provided by the school/students. School groups are welcome to stay after the program is finished to enjoy a bring-your-own picnic lunch at camp before boarding the bus.
Camp Discovery is proud to be able to offer a facilitator to student staffing ratio of 1:10, with chaperones and parents participating at no charge. Our policy is that once the program is booked and numbers are solidified, we will invoice based on those numbers (see tier chart to the right). If the total number decreases by 10 students and you do not inform us at least two weeks prior to your trip, you will be invoiced based on the last confirmed group size.
Steps to Scheduling Your Visit
Step 1: Email to request available dates. Please include your grade level, total number of students, number of classes, and program requested. Please provide your school contact information (school phone number with your classroom extension) as well as your personal cell phone number (in case of inclement weather). Please also include the name and contact information of the bookkeeper at your location.
Step 2: Check your email for correspondence from Camp Discovery and reply in a timely manner to confirm scheduling. Once we receive your confirmation you will be added to our programming calendar.
Step 3: Several weeks prior to visit, final numbers will need to be solidified and an invoice will be sent.
If the school must cancel a field study, please contact our office immediately at (803) 754-2008 or firstname.lastname@example.org. All schedule changes must be made at least 2 weeks in advance. Cancellations prior to two weeks in advance may be subject to a fee. If schedule changes occur due to inclement weather, we will make every effort to reschedule your visit.
In the case of extreme weather conditions (i.e. snow, extreme temperatures, thunderstorms), Camp Discovery may cancel the field study. Cancellations due to weather will be made before the end of school on the day before the scheduled trip, whenever possible. Camp staff will contact the school via phone or email on the day prior to scheduled field study. If trip is cancelled due to inclement weather, Camp Discovery will make every effort to reschedule your visit.
